The Story

Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Wāḥid stood apart among al-Nāṣir’s advisers by rejecting the idea of peace with Ibn Ghāniya. He advocated an expedition that would remove the Almoravid-associated leader from Ifrīqiya permanently. His position reflected a willingness to confront the imperial crisis through military action rather than accommodation.

His military reputation was established by the victory at Tadjra near Gabès, where Ibn Ghāniya was defeated and stripped of his wealth. On the advice of the caliph’s lieutenants, al-Nāṣir appointed him governor of Ifrīqiya, an office described as important and difficult. The conditions of his appointment gave him authority that made him effectively a viceroy, distancing provincial power from the central court.

As governor, ʿAbd al-Wāḥid subdued the Matmata and Nafūsa and pursued Ibn Ghāniya across the region. He defeated him near the Chelif and later crushed him at the foot of the Djabal Nafūsa in 1209–1210 with the support of numerous Arab groups and some Zenāta. His energy enabled Ifrīqiya to enjoy at least ten years of peace, although Ibn Ghāniya escaped and continued southward.
