The Acheulian Industry was a widespread African stone-tool tradition characterized by bifacial hand-axes and associated archaeological occupations. It appeared in East Africa about 1.5 million years ago and persisted through much of the Pleistocene, with late examples slightly older than 200,000 years. Its sites were broadly distributed across semi-arid to subhumid environments, especially near streams, springs, lakeshores, coasts, caves, and raw-material sources. The archaeological record suggests long-term continuity in basic adaptations despite substantial environmental fluctuation.

The Story
The Acheulian Industry is often treated as the characteristic technological companion of Homo erectus in Africa, but the association is not securely established across the continent. At Olduvai and in the western reaches of the Natron basin, the industry appears roughly 1.2 to 1.3 million years ago, while skeletal remains attributed to Homo erectus occur in the Koobi Fora area during this and later periods without much evidence of typical Acheulian accompaniment. The archaeological record therefore points to a complex relationship rather than a simple species-and-industry equation.
Olduvai preserves Acheulian material through the upper reaches of Bed II and in Beds III and IV, as well as the Masek Beds. Yet the Developed Oldowan Industry is present across the same broad range, and direct associations with Homo erectus remain limited. A cranium from the Lake Ndutu area may occur with a presumed Acheulian industry, while Gombore II at Melka Kunture in Ethiopia provides another eastern African association. These cases are important precisely because the documented links are few.
Southern Africa offers no secure direct association between Homo erectus and the Acheulian in the material discussed, although the Swartkans 15 mandible might eventually prove to have been found in an Acheulian context. In the Maghrib, several sites provide evidence of Homo erectus alongside Acheulian remains, but the strength of the associations varies. Thomas Quarry 2 yielded a hominid cranium with older Acheulian bifaces, spheroids, and mammal remains, while Littorina Cave contained a fragmentary mandible in a faunal accumulation and a nearby, essentially contemporaneous Acheulian assemblage that was not necessarily directly connected.
Ternifine is presented as the strongest North African case for a Homo erectus–Acheulian association. The site was a small spring-fed lake where vertebrate fauna, hominid cranial remains, and Acheulian artifacts were recovered from basal clays and overlying sands. The industry included large shaped tools, heavy-duty tools, flakes, and flake tools, and was considered most similar to an early Moroccan Acheulian phase. The absence of detailed information about spatial and vertical relationships nevertheless leaves the precise nature of the association unresolved.
