Environmental pressure and economic change

After 3000 BC, increasing desertification caused lakes and swamps in the Sahara to shrink or disappear, reducing access to aquatic resources. Communities that had depended on hunting, fishing, and collecting increasingly acquired livestock, especially cattle, while small stock such as sheep and goats had already become important in some areas. The changing environment encouraged more regular seasonal mobility and helped stabilize, and perhaps increase, population levels.

Around 2000 BC, the destruction of fragile Sahelian habitats became acute for cattle pastoralists. Cultivation allowed some communities to preserve sedentary or semi-sedentary lifeways while competing with mobile cattle-keepers. The resulting relationship between herders and cultivators involved exchange: grain moved toward pastoralists, while livestock, manure, milk products, and other goods moved toward agriculturalists. In places such as the Middle Niger, Lake Chad, and the Upper Nile basin, specialized fishing communities also exchanged aquatic products with pastoralists and farmers.

Regional domestication traditions

Plant domestication did not spread across sub-Saharan Africa from a single nuclear area. Different populations selected different staple crops, including millets and dry rice in West Africa, sorghum farther east in Chad and Sudan, teff in Ethiopia, and perhaps finger millet on the Upper Nile.
