The Story

A species recognized across two African fossil landscapes

Australopithecus afarensis was defined from a combined fossil sample recovered at Hadar in the Afar region of Ethiopia and at Laetoli in northern Tanzania. Laetoli had been known as a fossil-bearing locality since the 1930s, while the fossiliferous sediments of Hadar were discovered in 1969 and intensively investigated during the following decade. Together, the two sites yielded remains representing numerous individuals and a broad range of skeletal parts.

The Hadar and Laetoli samples were attributed to a single taxon because comparable jaws and teeth share closely similar morphology, size, and proportions. The postcranial remains reinforce this attribution: the pelvis, sacrum, hip, and knee display the distinctive structure associated with upright posture and effective bipedal locomotion in Australopithecus. The fossils also provide unusually important evidence for the shoulder, elbow, wrist, ankle, hand, and foot, areas that had previously been poorly represented.

The species was small-bodied and strongly sexually dimorphic. Female individuals are described as generally measuring between 107 and 122 centimetres, while Laetoli footprints suggest heights of approximately 120–130 centimetres for a smaller individual and 140–150 centimetres for a larger one. Its anatomy combined primitive cranial and dental traits with a foot capable of efficient striding, including a fully adducted great toe, pronounced heel strike, and a well-developed medial longitudinal arch.

Fossils, footprints, and habitat breadth

At Laetoli, fossil hominid remains occur in volcanic ash deposits alongside a diverse vertebrate fauna. The locality also preserves a trail of footprints attributed to at least two hominid individuals of different sizes. Their spatial relationships and foot morphology are remarkably human-like, providing direct evidence for an orthograde posture and an efficient striding gait even though some foot bones retain primitive or chimp-like characteristics.

The Hadar sample includes nearly all regions of the skeleton and represents both adults and juveniles. The AL 288-1 partial skeleton and the AL 333 site-complex are especially important because they preserve associated or potentially associated elements, including material from several adult and juvenile individuals. These remains clarify limb proportions, joint anatomy, and the functional structure of the hand and foot, while also demonstrating the mosaic character of the species' anatomy.

Australopithecus afarensis inhabited a range of environments rather than a single ecological setting. The species occupied wooded or more open streamside and lake-margin habitats and also entered sparsely wooded, open semiarid grasslands.
