The Story

Economic roots of the uprising

The Bailundu uprising followed a period of broad commercial prosperity in which many people participated in private trade. Root rubber had created new opportunities during the 1870s and 1880s, but the fall in rubber prices from 1899 to 1902 destabilized this economic order. The resulting crisis was not simply a downturn in export prices; it also opened the region to more aggressive European commercial penetration.

After 1899, Portuguese merchants and a new wave of poor European settlers established themselves in Bailundu commerce. Their arrival intensified local economic pressures at the moment when rubber revenues were already declining. African traders and communities therefore faced both the loss of favorable market conditions and the intrusion of competitors linked to Portuguese colonial expansion.

The uprising became a mass expression of resentment against this trade aggression. The passage identifies hostility toward European commercial intrusion as a major factor in the outbreak of the Bailundu war against the Portuguese. The conflict demonstrates how colonial resistance could grow from the defence of local economic autonomy as well as from opposition to direct political conquest.
