The victory enabled Sundjata to pursue Sumanguru’s allies, extend his conquests, and begin consolidating the Mali Empire.

The Story
The battle of Krina followed Sundjata’s return from exile and a series of victories against the Soso. Sumanguru had previously invaded and devastated the Malinke chiefdom, but Sundjata’s advance forced him back toward Soso territory. Krina became the decisive encounter between the forces of the returning Malinke leader and the Soso king.
The battlefield was located on the Niger, south of Beledгуgu, along the border between Soso and Malinke territories. The legends present the confrontation as a struggle between two powerful magicians, Sundjata and Sumanguru. In this version, Sundjata discovered Sumanguru’s secret and used poisoned wine, with the poison introduced through a white cock’s nail.
After the victory, Sundjata sent armies against Sumanguru’s allies, including the Diakhanke in Bambuk and the chief of Kita. Further expeditions conquered territories in several directions. The battle therefore marked not only the defeat of a rival ruler but also the beginning of Sundjata’s wider territorial expansion and imperial consolidation.
