Early Iron Age food-producing communities required raw materials that were not available everywhere. Salt was especially important because predominantly carbohydrate-based diets created a regular demand for it. Salt-producing sites such as Uvinza in western Tanzania became natural centers of local exchange, with trading systems sometimes extending for hundreds of kilometres.

Metal resources likewise moved beyond their places of extraction. Hematite outcrops in Swaziland, exploited from at least the fifth century, appear to have supplied iron for wider distribution. Copper ornaments found at Dambwa and other Early Iron Age sites in southern Zambia demonstrate exchange between communities far from the copper-bearing regions of the Kafue Hook and the Gwaai river valley.

The Sanga cemetery lay in an area rich in copper and salt, conditions that favored both local and interregional commerce. Exotic objects, including glass beads and seashells, occur at sites such as Mabveni, Gokomere, Kalundu, and Gundu. These finds suggest tentative and indirect connections between coastal markets and inland sources rather than established caravan routes across the continent.

By the end of the first millennium, the pattern may have begun to change. A reported export trade in ivory from the land of Zanj appears to have been centered in the country behind Sofala, while the Rhodesian plateau shows archaeological evidence of commercial prosperity and political centralization at Zimbabwe from at least the eleventh century. These developments offered early indications of the chieftainships and political structures of later centuries.
