Central Sahara

The French conquest of Tuat resulted from efforts to overcome the oasis region’s political dependence on Morocco and secure a route for projected trans-Saharan commerce. In December 1899 a French expedition demanded the surrender of In Salah. The Moroccan-appointed local chief, supported by Makhzen soldiers and sherifs, resisted, but France prevailed after battles including In Ghar on 27 December 1899. The final battle at Talmin in March 1901 completed the conquest, later formalized under pressure in a treaty draft dated 20 April 1902.

The Story

The oasis frontier

France turned to the Tuat question after the Madrid Conference of 1880–1881, partly in connection with plans for a trans-Saharan railway that would facilitate French trade with Central Africa. The oases of the central Sahara were politically dependent on Morocco, and Sultan Abd al-Aziz rejected French demands while strengthening Moroccan administrative and political presence in Tuat.

Under the pretext of scientific exploration, a strong French expedition approached the oases and appeared before In Salah in December 1899. It demanded immediate surrender, but the local chief appointed by the Sultan, surrounded by Makhzen soldiers and assisted by the sherifs of In Salah, offered fierce resistance. The battle of In Ghar on 27 December 1899 ended in French victory after heavy fighting.

The conquest extended across the oasis region, with the last battle taking place at Talmin in March 1901. Britain and Germany advised the young Sultan Abd al-Aziz to accept the fait accompli, and he signed a draft treaty under duress on 20 April 1902. His attempt to secure a clearly defined frontier in the south and east failed, leaving France room for further expansion.
