The Story
The Ifa system is located along the coast of the Gulf of Benin and is described as an especially rich form of ideographic practice. A diviner shuffles palm-nuts from one hand to the other eight times. The number remaining in the left hand determines a figure that is written on a tray covered with dust or directly on the ground.
The resulting signs form tables numbering up to 256, of which the sixteen most important are called the odu, described as the threads or words of the gods. Ifa, the god of destiny, governs this divinatory order. The system therefore combines numerical permutation, graphic recording, religious authority, and interpretation.
Individuals are expected to sacrifice to their own odu while also taking into account those of relatives, ancestors, and the wider country. The permutations are said to be combined into a mythological strategy that is simultaneously a graphological technique. Ifa thus appears not merely as fortune-telling, but as an organized method for encoding and interpreting social and ritual knowledge.
