Kagoro was a Luo military commander serving King Wamara in the Bachwezi empire of Kitara. He was appointed to command the army during a period of increasing ethnic and political tension. After famine and cattle disease weakened the empire, Kagoro staged a coup, massacred the Bachwezi aristocracy, and helped bring Bachwezi rule to an end.

The Story
Kagoro served as Wamara’s chief military commander during the final phase of Bachwezi rule. He is identified as Luo and was among the immigrant leaders whom Wamara attempted to incorporate into the political order through high office. His appointment placed him at the center of the empire’s military apparatus while the state was becoming increasingly multi-ethnic and multilingual.
The political strategy of appointment did not resolve tensions between the ruling Bachwezi aristocracy and the immigrant communities. The arrival of Luo and Bahima groups, together with other movements, created problems of integration that the loosely organized empire could not fully manage. Kagoro’s position gave him the opportunity to act when dissatisfaction spread across the empire.
A great famine was followed by a cattle disease affecting the empire. Kagoro seized this crisis to stage a coup against the Bachwezi, who were mercilessly massacred and whose bodies were thrown into water. The coup marked the end of the Bachwezi empire and opened the way for the Luo-Babito and Bahinda successor states.
