The Story

A fortified obstacle on the road to Siguiri

Kundian was a Tukulor fortress that occupied a strategically important position during the French advance in the Western Sudan. French military authorities described it as an obstacle on the road to Siguiri and Dinguiray. Its role in the campaign connected the broader offensive against Ahmadu with the reduction of a specific fortified center.

The fortress offered substantial physical defenses. Its tata was built with double masonry walls, and the garrison had removed the thatched roofing to prevent fire from spreading rapidly. These measures forced the French to rely on artillery rather than a quick assault, demonstrating the military resources invested in overcoming the position.

In February 1889, Archinard’s 80-millimetre mountain guns bombarded Kundian for eight hours before breaching the walls. The Tukulor garrison endured the bombardment and then mounted fierce resistance against the French. The attack marked a direct offensive against Ahmadu after France had reduced its need for an alliance with him.
