A North African Mousterian tradition

The Maghrib Mousterian forms one of the two broad Middle Palaeolithic complexes recognized in the Maghrib and Sahara, alongside the Aterian. It is not defined by a single artifact but by a recurring combination of flaking methods and tool forms. The assemblages are especially associated with Levallois and disc-core production, technological practices that structured the manufacture of flakes for later retouch.

Side-scrapers, or racloirs, are particularly prominent in the Maghrib Mousterian. At Jebel Irhoud, between Safi and Marrakech, a cave occupation contained a typical Mousterian industry, grassland fauna, two Neanderthal crania, and hearths. At Taforalt in eastern Morocco, the Mousterian horizon lay beneath four Aterian layers, while at Retaimia south of Oran a typical Mousterian assemblage was dominated by side-scrapers and Mousterian points.

North African evidence also reveals substantial regional variation. Tunisian sites such as Sidi Zin and Oued el-Akarit preserve Mousterian artifacts in relation to fossil springs, tufa, raised beaches, or sealed clay deposits.
