The Story

A dynasty across Kanem and Bornu

The Saifawa dynasty entered the political history of Kanem with Humai’s seizure of power about 1075. The passage remembers Humai as the pioneer of Islam in Kanem, while noting uncertainty over whether he converted or was Muslim by birth. His accession established a ruling house that would shape the political development of the central Sudan for centuries.

The dynasty’s authority was tested by internal division and external war. After the death of Mai Dunama Dibbalemi, conflict among his sons became endemic, while the Bulala wars and eastern incursions destabilized Kanem. In the 1390s, Mai Umar ibn Idris led the court and its followers into Bornu, transferring the Saifawa political tradition to a new territorial base.

In Bornu, the dynasty eventually recovered under Ali Gaji ibn Dunama, who eliminated rivals and established Ngasargamu as a permanent capital. Later Saifawa rulers continued campaigns against the Bulala and renewed relations with northern powers. The dynasty endured in Kanem and Bornu until its extinction in 1846.
