The Story

A regionalisation of armed resistance

In August 1966, SWAPO guerrillas clashed with South African forces in northern Namibia. The encounter was described as the first major armed conflict south of the Zambezi since the wars of dispossession had ended two generations earlier. It signalled that the military struggle surrounding apartheid was no longer confined to South African territory.

The conflict formed part of a wider ring of liberation wars developing around South Africa from the mid-1960s. Movements from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, and South Africa itself began military and guerrilla campaigns. South Africa responded by increasing its military resources and strengthening the forces intended to contain these movements.

Northern Namibia became one of the theatres through which the regional struggle was organised. The clash connected SWAPO’s campaign with South Africa’s security strategy and helped shape the cross-border character of the liberation struggle described in the period from 1961 to 1977.
