The Story

A spring-fed pool and early Acheulian tools

At Ternifine, sands accumulated in a small pool fed by a spring and were later quarried by Arambourg and other investigators. The deposits yielded a rich Middle Pleistocene fauna together with well-preserved Homo erectus fossils. The combination of hominin remains, animal evidence, and stone tools gives the site unusual importance within the early archaeological record of North Africa.

The stone-tool assemblage is described as an excellent sample of early Acheulian technology. It includes hand-axes, cleavers, choppers, and smaller tools, showing a broad repertoire rather than a narrowly specialized industry. The association of these artifacts with the spring deposits and fauna provides a significant archaeological context, even though the geological sequence has not received an absolute geophysical date.

The site is probably at least half a million years old and is considered unlikely to be much more than one million years old. These limits remain estimates rather than measurements. Ternifine consequently illustrates the value of stratified fossil and artifact associations while also demonstrating the chronological caution required when direct dating evidence is absent.
