The Action Group was a Nigerian political force formed from legislators elected to the Western House of Assembly under Chief Obafemi Awolowo. It replaced the moribund Nigerian Youth Movement and developed detailed programmes before the elections. Awolowo became leader of the Western Region government, while the party later participated at the centre in shifting alliances with the Northern People's Congress and the NCNC.

The Action Group emerged during the constitutional and electoral reorganisation of Nigeria. It replaced the moribund Nigerian Youth Movement and drew its initial strength from members elected to the Western House of Assembly. Chief Obafemi Awolowo had prepared detailed programmes before the election, giving the new force a more deliberate organisational and policy character.
After winning election to the Western House of Assembly, Awolowo formed the party from the successful candidates. He then became leader of the new Western Region government. The Action Group therefore linked regional electoral success with the institutional development of a Western Nigerian administration.
The party was not confined permanently to regional politics. At the centre, the Northern People's Congress normally governed with the NCNC, but sometimes included the Action Group in its alliances. Its occasional participation in central coalitions reflected the fluid and negotiated character of Nigerian politics before independence.
