The Aghlabids were the dynasty that ruled Ifriqiya before the Fatimid conquest and had established a long-lasting Muslim province in Sicily. Their authority over the Kutama region remained mostly nominal, while their fiscal demands and attempts at renewed subjugation contributed to opposition. The last Aghlabid emir, Ziyadat Allah III, was defeated by Abu Abd Allah's Kutama army and fled to Egypt, ending the Aghlabid period in North African history.

Le récit

The dynasty displaced by the Fatimids

The Aghlabids are presented as the ruling dynasty of Ifriqiya before the Fatimid takeover. They officially claimed mastery over the Kutama lands in Little Kabylia, but rarely enforced their authority there. The Kutama remained virtually independent and often sheltered deserters from the Aghlabid military establishment, reflecting the weakness of Aghlabid control in the region.

After a truce with the Rustumids at the end of the ninth century, the Aghlabids attempted to subjugate the Kutama more directly. Their armies occupied fortified places on the approaches to the Kutama zone, but the campaign helped create the conditions for the spread of Isma'ili propaganda. The resulting Kutama alliance with Abu Abd Allah became the military force that eventually destroyed Aghlabid rule.

The Aghlabids had also conquered Sicily over more than seventy years, from 212/827 to 289/902, and made the island a province of the Islamic world. In Ifriqiya, however, their final defeat came rapidly once the Kutama offensive began in 290/903. Abu Abd Allah captured Kayrawan, and Ziyadat Allah III abandoned Rakkada and fled to Egypt, bringing the Aghlabid period in North Africa to an end.
