Le récit

Founder of the New Kingdom

Ahmose I emerged from the Theban ruling house during the final phase of the war against the Hyksos. His achievement was to complete the liberation of Egypt after nearly 150 years of foreign domination in the Delta. By capturing the Hyksos capital, Avaris, he destroyed the central base from which their rule had been maintained.

Ahmose did not stop at the capture of Avaris. He followed the expelled rulers into Palestine and laid siege to the stronghold of Sharuhen. He then continued northward and raided the land of Zahi, identified in the narrative with the Phoenician coast, thereby breaking the remaining power of the Hyksos and extending the campaign beyond Egypt’s eastern frontier.

The political significance of Ahmose’s victory exceeded the immediate military result. The expulsion of the Hyksos restored Egyptian independence and opened the period remembered as the New Kingdom. Later Egyptian historical memory therefore treated Ahmose as both the founder of the Eighteenth Dynasty and the father of a renewed imperial state.
