Le récit

A constitutional nationalist programme

In 1943, Ferhat Abbas issued the Algerian Manifesto amid the political upheavals of wartime French North Africa. The declaration called for the creation of an autonomous, democratic Algerian state. Its proposed relationship with France was federal, indicating a demand for substantial self-government while stopping short of an immediate break with the French polity.

The manifesto belonged to a wider North African political climate in which independence had already entered the nationalist agenda as a long-term objective. Pan-Arabism, dissatisfaction with colonial rule, and the weakening of French prestige after the fall of France contributed to a more advanced nationalist situation in the Maghrib than south of the Sahara.

The document’s programme illustrates the range of political positions within wartime anti-colonial movements. Algerian nationalism could express itself through demands for autonomy, democracy, and federal association, even while broader developments were pushing the question of independence into public debate. The manifesto therefore stands as an important marker of wartime constitutional nationalism.
