The Almoravid conquest of most of the Maghrib during the eleventh century was carried out by Berber nomads of the Sahara who had recently converted to Islam. Together with the contemporary incursions of Arab bedouin, it marked a turning point by promoting the Arabization of Berber populations and reinforcing Islamic orthodoxy in North Africa.

Le récit

A turning point in North African history

The Almoravids are described as Berber nomads from the Sahara who had recently and rigorously adopted Islam. During the eleventh century they conquered most of the Maghrib, transforming a region where large-scale Arabization had not yet occurred. Their advance formed part of a wider reorganization of North African political and religious life.

The conquest coincided with incursions by Arab bedouin that began in the same century. These two developments together made possible a general Arabization of Berber populations, while the Almoravid victory helped secure the triumph of orthodoxy in North African Islam. The passage therefore treats the event as a major structural change rather than merely a dynastic military success.

The Almoravid achievement also created the conditions for later Berber empires to operate under the banner of Islamic orthodoxy. The passage notes that some of the greatest Berber achievements, especially the Almohad empire, were subsequently accomplished within this religious framework. The event thus linked Saharan Berber initiative with the political and religious consolidation of the Maghrib.
