Angola achieved independence from Portugal in 1975 after a liberation struggle divided among the MPLA, FNLA, and UNITA. The conflict developed into an internal civil war and attracted extensive foreign intervention. Cuban troops and Soviet and Yugoslav arms helped the MPLA prevail, while the opposing movements received support from Zaire, China, the United States, and South Africa.

Le récit

Angola’s liberation struggle was shaped by the fragmentation of nationalist politics. Three principal movements contested the country’s future: the Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA), the Frente Nacional de Libertação de Angola (FNLA), and UNITA, which initially broke away from the FNLA. The struggle for independence consequently became entangled with an internal civil war.

The conflict drew in external powers. The Soviet Union, Cuba, and several African states, including Nigeria, supported the MPLA. The FNLA received backing from the United States, Zaire, and the People’s Republic of China, while UNITA appealed to South Africa for military assistance. These alignments made Angola a major arena of international involvement in the decolonisation of southern Africa.

The MPLA ultimately secured victory with decisive foreign military and material support. More than 4,000 Cuban soldiers and Soviet and Yugoslav weapons contributed to the outcome. Angola became an independent state in 1975, ending approximately four centuries of Portuguese colonial rule in Africa.
