An earlier Stone Age quarry and stone-working locality in the Arkin area of Nubia. Its assemblage, recovered through excavation and surface collection, is notable for a strong Levallois component and bifacial foliate forms resembling Lupemban lances. Proposed quarry pits in Nubian sandstone and the shallow deposits complicate secure interpretation of the site’s activities.

Arkin 5 lies in the Arkin area of Nubia, where earlier Stone Age material was recovered by a combination of excavation and surface collection. The locality has been interpreted as a quarry site, with hollows in the surface of Nubian sandstone proposed as quarry pits. These depressions may later have been used as places for working stone.
The shallow deposits covering the archaeological occurrences make detailed interpretation insecure. They offer limited protection for activity traces and complicate the relationship between the proposed quarry pits and the artifacts found around them. The site is therefore valuable less as a fully reconstructed settlement than as evidence for the procurement and processing of stone in the Nubian landscape.
Arkin 5 is distinguished by a strong Levallois component and by several bifacial foliate forms resembling Lupemban lances. The resemblance does not establish that the objects belong to a Lupemban industry, but it marks a technological feature shared with material discussed elsewhere in the regional sequence. Together, the quarry interpretation and tool composition make Arkin 5 an important counterpart to the nearby Arkin 8 occurrence.
