Askiya Muhammad, also called Muhammad the Great, was a Songhay ruler who came to power in 1493 after challenging Sii Baru. He strengthened the empire through a professional army, expanded cavalry, and campaigns that extended Songhay’s tributary lands from Taghaza to Agadez and across former Malian territories. His reign established the institutional and territorial foundations of Songhay’s sixteenth-century power.

Muhammad the Great and Imperial Consolidation

Muhammad Turé was an army commander and provincial governor under Sii Ali Beeri. His opposition to Ali’s brutal treatment of Muslims in Timbuktu helped define his political position. After Sii Ali’s death, Muhammad Turé challenged Sii Baru and emerged victorious in 1493 after two fierce and bloody battles. He adopted the military rank Askiya as the title of his new ruling dynasty.

Askiya Muhammad ruled from 1493 to 1529 and strengthened the imperial system created under Sii Ali. He established a professional full-time army and expanded the cavalry, allowing Songhay to project power beyond the Middle Niger and the Inland Delta waterways. His administration organized the immense realm through western and eastern military divisions based respectively in Timbuktu and Gao.

Under his rule, Songhay maintained tributary lands northward to the salt pans of Taghaza, westward over former Malian territories, and eastward to the Tuareg sultanate of Agadez. The scale of this expansion increased the importance of succession management, but it also made Askiya Muhammad one of the principal architects of Songhay’s imperial peak. In old age he faced rebellion from his sons and abdicated in favor of Musa in 1529.
