The Augustinum was founded at Otjimbingwe in 1866, when the mission colony was combining religious work, trade, and political engagement. It belonged to the RMS and served as a teacher-training college, giving the settlement an educational role alongside its function as a mission and trading centre.
The institution’s importance lay in its long-term potential rather than in an immediate mass conversion. Herero conversion had proceeded slowly, with only sixty-nine baptisms recorded by 1870. The Augustinum nevertheless opened a path toward cultural transformation by training people within a Christian missionary framework.
Its foundation formed part of a wider reordering of central Namibian society. Missionaries, traders, African leaders, and armed groups all operated in the same changing environment, making education one element of a broader transformation that also involved political authority, commerce, and religious practice.
