The Bailundu Rebellion of 1904 was an anti-Portuguese uprising in Angola associated with the Bailundu ruler Muta-ya-Kavela. The rebellion drew support from related Umbundu kingdoms, former subject peoples, and non-Umbundu peasants affected by forced labour and economic exploitation. Its forces temporarily drove the Portuguese from the Ovimbundu highlands before colonial power was restored.

Le récit

Resistance in the Ovimbundu Highlands

The Bailundu rebellion developed under the leadership of Muta-ya-Kavela, who had nominally accepted Portuguese authority but used the 1902 crisis to build an anti-colonial coalition. The movement reflected the continuing political importance of African rulers whose authority colonial officials attempted to reduce to a ceremonial or subordinate role. Resistance therefore targeted both Portuguese domination and the restructuring of local leadership.

The uprising expanded through alliances. Related Umbundu kingdoms supported Muta-ya-Kavela, while former subject peoples such as the Kasongi, Civanda, and Ngalanga also joined the struggle. The rebels further attracted non-Umbundu peasants who experienced forced labour and economic exploitation, giving the movement a social base that exceeded the established political elite.

The Bailundu achieved a notable but temporary military success in 1904 by driving Portuguese forces from the Ovimbundu highlands. Their defeat did not erase the significance of this achievement. It challenged the assumption that African societies accepted colonial rule passively and showed how ethnic ties, former rivalries, and economic grievances could be combined in a single insurrection.
