The Bardera Djihād was a militant Islamic reform movement launched from Bardera on the Juba River in the late 1830s. Its leaders sought to impose an Islamic theocracy in southern Somalia and captured Brava in 1840, but the movement was defeated in 1843 when Sultan Yusuf Muhammad of the Geledi mobilized regional allies and destroyed Bardera.

Le récit

The Bardera Djihād emerged from a religious settlement on the Juba River during the late 1830s. Its reformers aimed to impose their interpretation of an Islamic theocracy on the peoples of southern Somalia, combining religious activism with organized political and military action.

The movement expanded beyond its base and succeeded in subduing the coastal town of Brava in 1840. This victory demonstrated the reformers’ ability to project power from the Juba interior toward the Benadir coast, placing them in direct conflict with established clan authorities and coastal interests.

The decisive counterstroke came in 1843. Yusuf Muhammad, the Geledi sultan, assembled allies from the country between the Shebelle and Juba rivers, besieged Bardera, and burned the settlement to the ground. The defeat ended the movement’s political challenge and elevated Yusuf Muhammad’s authority across southern Somalia.
