The battle of 15 June 1863 followed a failed attack by Christian Afrikaner’s commando against forces assembled at Otjimbingwe in response to Maherero’s symbolic raid. The confrontation involved Nama-Oorlam and Herero forces, as well as Andersson’s men, and resulted in the deaths of about 200 Nama-Oorlam and 60 Herero, including Christian Afrikaner, his ally Piet Koper, and Hirarapi.

The battle followed Maherero’s break with Afrikaner authority and the raid led by his nephew Hirarapi. Christian Afrikaner assembled a commando of approximately 400–500 men and attacked forces gathered at Otjimbingwe. Those forces included leaders and communities connected to Zeraua and Maherero, together with Andersson’s men.
Christian Afrikaner’s attack failed. The subsequent battle on 15 June 1863 produced losses far greater than those associated with ordinary cattle-raiding expeditions, reflecting the scale of the political crisis. About 200 Nama-Oorlam and 60 Herero died in the fighting.
The dead included Christian Afrikaner, his ally Piet Koper, and Hirarapi. Their deaths altered the balance of power in central Namibia but did not immediately end the conflict. In the following months Maherero’s forces and Andersson’s allies attempted to consolidate their gains, attacking Windhoek and moving toward Rehoboth.
