The Battle of Ayn Jalut, fought in September 1260, was a major Mamluk victory over a Mongol army and its Armenian and Georgian auxiliaries. Led by Qutuz and Baybars, the Mamluk forces defeated and captured the Mongol commander Kitbuga Noyon. The battle halted the Mongol advance into Egypt and parts of Syria and shifted the aura of military invincibility toward the Mamluks.

Le récit

The battle took place after the Mongol conquest of Baghdad and the destruction of major Syrian centers, including Aleppo and Damascus. Facing the possibility of further devastation in Egypt, the Mamluk sultan Qutuz led an army from Egypt into Palestine, accompanied by the senior amir Baybars. Their campaign confronted a Mongol force operating with Armenian and Georgian auxiliaries.

Near Ayn Jalut in September 1260, the Mamluks inflicted a heavy defeat on the Mongol army. Kitbuga Noyon, the Mongol commander, was captured and executed, while the remaining forces retreated toward Iraq. Garrisons in Syrian towns were also driven out after local Muslim populations rose against them.

The victory stopped the Mongol westward advance and preserved Egypt and parts of Syria from further devastation. Its significance should nevertheless be measured carefully: the Mongol force was a detachment, and Hulagu had been compelled to return to Mongolia after the death of the Great Khan. Even so, the battle became a foundational episode in the Mamluk reputation for military superiority.
