Bidderi was a settlement in the Bagirmi region founded, according to one account, by the Fulani cleric Ould De’de’. He abandoned his pilgrimage after finding his father’s grave along the route and established himself there. Bidderi soon became an important religious center, while the settled Fulani joined other groups associated with the formation of Bagirmi.

The foundation story of Bidderi links religious settlement to the movement of pilgrims across the central Sudan. Ould De’de’, a Fulani cleric, set out on pilgrimage after his father had travelled ahead of him. When he reached the Bagirmi region, he learned that his father had died there on the return journey and had been buried in the area.
Rather than continue toward the holy places, Ould De’de’ decided to remain near his father’s grave. He founded Bidderi, which the account places around 1500. The settlement soon became an important religious center, transforming a stopping place on a pilgrimage route into a durable focus of Islamic learning and clerical presence.
The established Fulani did not stand apart from the surrounding society. They joined with other groups described as founders of Bagirmi, making Bidderi part of a broader process in which pilgrimage, migration, religious authority, and political formation overlapped.
