The Chilembwe Rebellion of 1915 was an abortive anti-colonial insurrection in Nyasaland led by John Chilembwe. It emerged from a religious and political vision of a divinely inspired African state, while also addressing colonial exploitation. Although the uprising failed, Chilembwe became an anti-colonial martyr whose symbolic importance eventually exceeded the immediate military results of the revolt.

Le récit

Religious Vision and Insurrection

John Chilembwe belonged to a generation of African religious leaders who transformed Christian ideas into a language of political liberation. Alongside Kamwana, another Nyasaland leader, he imagined a divinely inspired African state rather than accepting colonial rule as permanent. His movement therefore combined religious expectation with opposition to the political and economic order imposed by European authorities.

Unlike Kamwana, who urged his followers to purify themselves while explicitly rejecting violent resistance, Chilembwe led his followers in an insurrection in 1915. The passage characterizes the rebellion as abortive and possibly symbolic, leaving uncertainty about the precise scope of Chilembwe’s ultimate political goals. His action nevertheless demonstrated that mission Christianity could generate forms of anti-colonial mobilization rather than simple accommodation.

George Caleb Bingham, 20 Mar 1811 - 7 Jul 1879 — John Quincy Adams (Smithsonian)

Chilembwe’s importance continued after his death. He became an anti-colonial martyr, and the memory of his rebellion acquired a significance greater than its immediate accomplishments. His example also illustrates the broader effort by African leaders to build movements that crossed local ethnic and political boundaries and addressed the rural masses directly.
