Darfur was a self-governing state whose recorded history began in the fourteenth century. By the mid-seventeenth century, its position between Mediterranean Europe and sub-Saharan Africa made it a commercial hub connecting regional and long-distance trade. In January 1917, Darfur became part of Sudan, which was subsequently absorbed into the British Empire.

Darfur’s recorded history begins in the fourteenth century, when the region developed as a self-governing state. Its position between the Mediterranean world and sub-Saharan Africa gave it importance beyond its immediate surroundings. Over the following centuries, Darfur’s political autonomy and location shaped its role in regional affairs.
By the mid-seventeenth century, Darfur had become a thriving commercial hub. Trade moved northward toward the Mediterranean, including slaves, ivory, ostrich feathers, and other goods. Slaves were captured in raids against neighboring peoples and during wars of conquest within the surrounding region, linking Darfur’s prosperity to coercive systems as well as exchange.
In January 1917, Darfur became part of Sudan. Sudan was then absorbed into the British Empire, while British authorities showed little interest in developing Darfur. The region consequently became a remote economic and political backwater, vulnerable to wider power struggles and later conflicts.
