The Denyanke Kingdom of Futa Toro was a Fulbe-linked dynasty established in the Senegal Valley after the movements associated with Koly Tengella. Le récit
The Denyanke polity emerged from the movements of Koly Tengella and his followers. After 1490, companions of Koly or his son moved north and founded the Denyanke dynasty in Futa Toro, in the Senegal Valley. This development coincided with the arrival of Portuguese traders, who redirected commercial flows toward the Atlantic and contributed to the transformation of Senegambian politics.
Denyanke power grew as the Jolof confederacy weakened and then fragmented. The satigi exploited the break-up of Jolof to extend domination over much of northern Senegambia. Futa Toro's position in the Senegal Valley allowed it to stand between inland trade routes and the Atlantic-facing regions, while its power also cut Jolof off from trans-Saharan commerce.
The dynasty reached its apogee at the beginning of the seventeenth century during the reign of Samba Lamu. Futa Toro then controlled both trade between the Sudan and the Sahara and European sea-borne commerce. Its rise illustrates how political authority in northern Senegambia was reshaped by the intersection of inland commercial routes, Atlantic trade, and the fragmentation of older regional confederacies.
