Diara was a Soninke successor kingdom founded after the destruction of the Kaya-Magha kingdom. Its first dynasty belonged to the Niakhate clan, whose founder, Mana Maghan Niakhate, is said to have defeated raiding Malinke bands and established himself as king at Diara. The Niakhate later became vassals first of the Soso and then of Mali, before being overthrown by the Diawara dynasty toward the end of the fourteenth century.

Le récit

The Niakhate kingdom of Diara

Diara was founded after the destruction of the Kaya-Magha kingdom. According to the traditions summarized here, the collapse of Kaya-Magha scattered populations: some moved to Kusāta and became known as Kusa, while others moved to Diara. The new kingdom arose in the region of Kingui, where political disorder followed the fall of Wagadu.

The first dynasty of Diara was associated with the Niakhate clan. Tradition recounts that Malinke bands from the south raided the region, prompting Mana Maghan Niakhate, a Soninke merchant familiar with the area, to organize an army from his own followers and local Soninke and Diawambe people. After defeating the raiders, he was invited to remain and became king at Diara.

The Niakhate later became vassals of the Soso and subsequently came under Mali’s domination. Mali allowed them to govern their kingdom through a commissioner who represented imperial authority. Toward the end of the fourteenth century, the Diawara dynasty exploited internal dissension in Diara and the weakness of Mali’s kings to overthrow the Niakhate.
