Le récit

An Algerian critic of postwar colonial reform

Emir Khalid emerged as a prominent critic of French rule in Algeria after the First World War. The Algerian contribution to the war effort brought economic and political improvements, but these measures were opposed by European settlers and appeared insufficient to Khalid. His criticism connected wartime sacrifice with demands for a more substantial change in Algerians’ political status.

Khalid was the grandson of Abd al-Qadir, a lineage that placed him within the memory of earlier Algerian resistance to French conquest. In the postwar period he strongly criticized the French administration and challenged the limited nature of the reforms that had been granted.

French authorities deported Emir Khalid in 1924. The passage characterizes him as the founder of the Algerian nationalist movement, giving his postwar opposition a foundational place in the development of Algerian political nationalism.
