The Florisbad cranium is a partial hominid cranium discovered in 1932 at a thermal spring site in the Orange Free State. A disputed fossil from a spring setting

The partial cranium from Florisbad, in the Orange Free State, became the subject of sustained scientific discussion after its discovery in 1932. Its archaeological and geological setting was unusual: the specimen was found in relation to the eye of a thermal spring, alongside questions about its association with vertebrate fossils and a distinctive Middle Stone Age industry. These contextual issues were subsequently addressed through chemical assays and radiometric age determination.

The fossil, associated fauna, and Hagenstad variant of the Middle Stone Age were judged to be broadly contemporaneous. Their age was placed well over 40,000 years, although the extract does not provide a more precise date. This chronology situates Florisbad within the later Pleistocene record of southern Africa.

Anatomical interpretation remained less settled than the contextual association. Some scholars saw resemblances to Homo sapiens rhodesiensis, whereas others regarded the specimen as more anatomically modern and belonging to another, more recent subspecies.
