Gibeon, formerly called Kachatsus, became a base of the Witboois in 1863 when the group settled there with a missionary. It later served as the centre of Hendrik Witbooi’s religious and political activity. Witbooi left Gibeon in 1884, returned to prominence there after defeating Paul Visser in July 1888, and assumed the captaincy of Gibeon.

Gibeon, formerly known as Kachatsus, became an important settlement in the history of the Witboois. In 1863 the group established a base there together with a missionary. The settlement connected the Witboois to Cape-based exchange networks, through which they imported goods including clothes, food, alcohol, arms, and horses.
Hendrik Witbooi developed a close relationship with the mission church at Gibeon. From about the age of thirty-eight he became a committed member and later an elder, while also building connections with the Rhenish Missionary Society. Gibeon was therefore both a religious centre and a political base from which Witbooi’s authority expanded.
In 1884 Witbooi left Gibeon with followers, seeking independence from his father and access to better grazing. After later conflicts, he defeated Paul Visser and his allies at Gibeon in July 1888 and took up the captaincy of the community. The settlement thus remained central to the consolidation of Witbooi’s leadership.
