Le récit

A monument of Almoravid and Andalusian synthesis

The Great Mosque of Tlemcen is presented as the finest surviving example of Almoravid architecture in the extract. Its construction began around 1082 and ended in 1136, placing the monument within the period of Almoravid rule in the western Maghrib. The building measured approximately 50 metres by 60 metres and possessed an imposing monumental character.

Its significance lay in the combination of different artistic traditions. The mosque joined the vigor and majesty associated with Saharan architecture to the refinement and delicacy of Andalusian art. This synthesis made Tlemcen an important architectural point within the broader cultural exchange linking North Africa and Spain.

The design was especially notable for the juxtaposition of an Andalusian ribbed dome with Iranian-inspired corbels in the form of muqarnas, or stalactite-like projections. Lobed arches and decorative motifs further enriched the interior, giving the monument a place among the major works of western Muslim art.
