Guano, valued as a fertiliser, was discovered on Ichaboe Island off the Namibian coast in 1843. The discovery triggered a rush by mainly British ships and connected Namibia’s coastal resources to expanding international commercial demand. The boom formed part of the wider transformation of trade that was drawing inland settlements more closely into Cape and maritime networks.
The rush rapidly produced disorder. By October 1844, approximately 350 vessels and 6,000 seamen were crowded around the island, creating conditions so chaotic that a British naval ship was sent to impose order. The episode demonstrates how quickly a single resource could attract large-scale shipping and labour to the Namibian coast.
The Ichaboe deposits were temporarily exhausted early in the following year. Nevertheless, the demand generated by guano stimulated Cape traders and helped commerce to expand more broadly across southern and central Namibia.
