Hard iron was not simply any presence of iron metal. The carbon in charcoal was essential to harden the metal, while later hammering transformed the raw product into weapons and tools. The provisional interpretation is that imported iron objects appeared around the middle of the first millennium AD, followed by the diffusion of iron-working toward the end of that millennium.
Taruga, in central Nigeria, provides the clearest early sub-Saharan evidence in the excerpt. Excavations found Nok-style figurines alongside iron slag and iron-smelting furnaces. Radiocarbon results included dates of 440 ± 140 BC, 300 ± 100 BC, and 280 ± 120 BC, including charcoal from inside a furnace.
