Hoornkrans was a settlement established by Hendrik Witbooi in 1889 west of Rehoboth. It brought together the Witbooi group and many leaderless people, including followers of Jan Jonker, Paul Visser, and +Arisemab. The settlement became a tightly disciplined Christian community whose economy combined cattle raiding, tribute, husbandry, and trade in horses, arms, and other commodities. It served as the organizational base of Witbooi’s political and military power.

Hendrik Witbooi established Hoornkrans in 1889, west of Rehoboth, during a period of expanding conflict among Nama and Herero-speaking groups. The settlement gathered the Witbooi group together with many leaderless people, including followers associated with Jan Jonker, Paul Visser, and +Arisemab. Its foundation gave Witbooi a stable base from which to organize authority and attract additional followers.
Hoornkrans was described as a tightly disciplined Christian community. Its social cohesion depended heavily on Witbooi’s leadership, religious authority, and ability to persuade people that he understood the will of God. The community therefore combined political organization with a religious identity that helped sustain loyalty beyond immediate military coercion.
The settlement’s economy was based on stock raiding, the distribution of its products among households, and, to some extent, husbandry. It also traded horses, arms, musical instruments, and other commodities. This combination of economic resources and military organization enabled Hoornkrans to support Witbooi’s resistance to German intervention and his campaigns against rival groups.
