Ibn Zamrak was a Nasrid poet and prose stylist who succeeded Ibn al-Khatib as vizier. His poems were incorporated into the decorative program of the Alhambra, where they became part of the complex’s calligraphic and architectural imagery. His career ended violently when he was assassinated by order of the amir sometime after 1393.

Ibn Zamrak was one of the most prominent literary figures of Nasrid Granada. Born in 1333, he worked in verse and prose and was described as another verbal magician whose art continued the refined literary culture associated with the Alhambra. His writing formed part of the courtly world in which poetry, architecture, and political patronage were closely connected.
He had been a protégé of Ibn al-Khatib and later succeeded him as vizier. Some of Ibn Zamrak’s poems were transformed into elaborate calligraphic decoration and still adorned the walls of the Alhambra. Through this integration of verse and architecture, his work became a visible component of Nasrid artistic culture.
His political success did not protect him from the violence of court life. The extract states that Ibn Zamrak was eventually assassinated by order of the amir, sometime after 1393. His divan has not survived, although individual poems remained preserved through their architectural inscriptions.
