He pursued warfare against neighbouring states, defeated the king of Sankaran in 1776, and imposed military factional authority over the religious faction. His death in 1791 initiated the alternating political succession between the Alfaya and Soriya families.

Le récit

Sory the Great and military power

Ibrahima Sory Mawdo, known as Sory the Great, rose to prominence as the commander who followed the religious leader of the Futa Jallon jihad. His leadership shifted the kingdom toward military expansion and an aggressive policy against neighbouring countries. Working with the leader of the Jallonke kingdom of Solimana, he launched campaigns to procure slaves and booty.

Sory Mawdo suffered a major setback in 1762 when Konde Burama, king of Sankaran, defeated the allied forces and occupied Timbo. Resistance halted the Sankaran army at the gates of Fugumba, and the struggle continued until Sory Mawdo finally defeated Konde Burama in 1776. That victory consolidated his power and allowed him to impose the authority of the military faction over the religious faction.

Sory Mawdo remained in power until his death in 1791. His death produced political confusion and led to the alternating rule of the Alfaya, descendants of Karamokho Alfa, and the Soriya, descendants of Sory Mawdo himself. This succession arrangement weakened the central government but preserved the political importance of the ruling families.
