John Chilembwe’s rising broke out in Nyasaland in January 1915 and expressed opposition to colonial authority through a movement marked by strong Christian undertones. The revolt developed during the early phase of the First World War, when Nyasa men were enlisted for military service and suffered heavy losses in battles against German forces.
Recruitment was central to the revolt’s immediate background. Chilembwe objected to the demand that African men fight and die in a war described as belonging to the wider world rather than to Nyasaland.
