Kahimemua was an eastern Otjiherero-speaking leader and Mbanderu omuhona who resisted the restructuring of political authority and the territorial restrictions imposed by German colonial officials. He opposed the extension of Samuel Maharero’s authority, defended access to land and cattle, and joined the 1896 eastern resistance. After defeat at Otjunda near Epukiro, he surrendered and was executed by firing squad at Okahandja on 12 June 1896.

Le récit

An eastern political rival

Kahimemua appears in the account as a senior eastern leader whose authority challenged the political order being built by German officials. He was identified as the Mbanderu omuhona and regarded himself as Samuel Maharero’s counterpart in the east, independent of the Okahandja paramountcy. German boundary treaties and the elevation of Nicodemus Kavikunua weakened his position while placing eastern communities under increasing colonial pressure.

The new frontier damaged the economic basis of eastern communities. German authorities restricted grazing, confiscated cattle, and threatened control of Gobabis, a place claimed by Kahimemua. He wrote to Leutwein asking why he was refused part of the land. These grievances were intensified by drought and by the broader political subordination of leaders who resisted German attempts to reorganise authority.

Kahimemua joined the eastern resistance in 1896. After an attack on the German garrison at Gobabis, he and the main body of Otjiherero-speakers moved into the veld with the Khauas. They were defeated at Otjunda, near Epukiro, by a coalition including German troops and African allies. Kahimemua surrendered after severe losses, was imprisoned at Okahandja, and was executed by firing squad on 12 June 1896. Oral traditions later portrayed him as a prophetic and uncompromising figure.
