Kambonde was the Ndonga king during the early stages of the Namibian War. Unlike Nehale, he adopted a cautious position and did not immediately commit the Ovambo polities to active conflict. The pages nevertheless place the wider Ovambo region within the support networks that supplied arms and ammunition to forces opposing German rule and received Herero refugees after the defeat at Ohamakari, or Waterberg.

Le récit

Kambonde, identified as the Ndonga king, took a more cautious line during the early stages of the war. After the attack on Namutoni, the Ovambo polities largely withdrew from active conflict rather than openly expanding the confrontation with German forces.

This caution did not mean complete disengagement. The pages describe the Ovambo polities as a conduit for arms and ammunition reaching forces opposed to the Germans. They also received Herero refugees after the defeat at Ohamakari, known as Waterberg, indicating that the northern polities remained involved in the consequences of the war even without direct sustained combat.

Kambonde’s position contrasted with Nehale’s intervention against the German fort at Namutoni. The contrast reveals political variation within the region rather than a single unified Ovambo response to German expansion.
