After the decisive conflict that united the Malinke, the chiefs gathered at Ka-ba, identified with Kangaba. There they swore fealty to Sundjata as their sovereign and accepted their own chiefdoms from him. The assembly marked the political transformation of the Malinke country into an empire with dependent provinces.
Kangaba later became associated with the continuing history of the Keita. After Niani was destroyed in the seventeenth century, the senior Keita branch moved first to Mali-Kura and then to Kaba, or Kangaba, on the opposite bank of the Niger. The town thereby remained connected to the dynasty’s memory and lineage.
