Le récit

A post-war territorial settlement

Libya’s post-war status was shaped by the division of its provinces among different administering powers. Britain administered the coastal territories of Tripolitania and Cyrenaica, while France administered the Saharan territory of Fezzan. These arrangements followed the defeat of Italy and the removal of its North African colonial authority.

The three provinces did not remain separate political units. At the insistence of the United Nations, Tripolitania, Cyrenaica, and Fezzan became independent together in 1951 as the Kingdom of Libya. The outcome joined territories that had been governed by Britain and France during the transition.

The creation of the kingdom illustrates the role of international pressure in the post-war transformation of former Italian colonies. Independence was achieved through the combination of provincial unification and an internationally supported settlement rather than through the continuation of wartime occupation arrangements.
