The Kololo conquest of the Lozi Kingdom was a military expansion that began with the crossing of the Zambezi in the 1830s and culminated in the conquest of the Lozi Kingdom over the following decade. Kololo forces were associated with the Sotho-speaking group led by Sibiutwane and probably received assistance from Liswani I of the Subiya. By 1851, Sekeletu had based himself at Linyanti in modern Caprivi.

Le récit

Crossing the Zambezi and conquering the Lozi

The Kololo intervention emerged from the political struggles of the Caprivi and Upper Zambezi region. In the 1830s, Liswani I of the Subiya probably assisted Kololo forces led by Sibiutwane in crossing the Zambezi. The alliance connected local opposition to Lozi rule with the expansion of a larger Sotho-speaking military power.

The Kololo then conquered the Lozi Kingdom over the following decade. The conquest transformed the political balance of the region and demonstrates how local struggles over autonomy could intersect with the movement of larger military formations. The account presents the intervention as one of several episodes in which authority in Caprivi was contested, transferred, or reorganized.

By 1851, Sekeletu had based himself at Linyanti, identified with present-day Sangwali in modern Caprivi, between the Linyanti and Kwando rivers. The surrounding swamps offered some security, although disease caused many deaths among the newcomers. This later settlement shows the continuing importance of the Caprivi waterways to the political geography created by the conquest.
