Lake Kivu is a Great Lakes lake shared by Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The excerpt describes it as containing vast quantities of dissolved gases, especially methane, and as both an energy resource and a potential natural hazard. Rwanda and the DRC agreed to extract methane to generate power and reduce the danger of a catastrophic explosion affecting nearby populations.

Le récit

Energy resource and environmental hazard

Lake Kivu occupies a strategic position between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its waters contain large quantities of dissolved gases, including methane, and the surrounding population is described as numbering approximately two million people. This combination of dense settlement and unstable gas reserves makes the lake both an economic opportunity and a serious environmental concern.

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo signed an agreement to extract methane from the lake. The planned production was intended to provide electricity for the two countries and their neighbors. At the same time, removing methane was expected to avert the possibility of a catastrophic explosion, giving the project a dual purpose in energy policy and disaster prevention.

Lake Kivu also has an established transport role. The statistical profile identifies Lac Kivu as navigable by shallow-draft barges and native craft and lists Cyangugu, Gisenyi, and Kibuye among Rwanda’s ports and terminals. The lake therefore connects questions of regional infrastructure, energy, settlement, and cross-border cooperation.
