Le récit

Lesotho entered independence with a conservative-monarchical political settlement. The kingdom was characterized as a constitutional monarchy, with Paramount Chief Motlotlehi Moshoeshoe II occupying the throne. This arrangement placed hereditary authority alongside the institutions of a newly independent state.

The constitutional framework did not prevent a later seizure of power. Four years after independence, Chief Leabua Jonathan, then prime minister, took power extralegally. His action directly challenged the position of the monarch within the political order.

Jonathan placed the king under house arrest, turning a constitutional monarchy into a site of executive conflict. The passage uses Lesotho as an example of how inherited monarchical arrangements could coexist with unstable postcolonial political authority.
